Gingivitis is a gum disease that results in the inflammation of the gums, or the gingiva, which is the area of the gum that directly surrounds the teeth. It can be painful, annoying to deal with, and if left untreated, can lead to a more serious disease called periodontitis which can result in tooth loss. Gingivitis is both easy to recognize and easy to prevent.
Prevention of gingivitis comes from cleaning your teeth often, which includes brushing and flossing every day. Having semi-annual cleanings at the dentist is also an effective preventative measure. When you don't take care of your teeth, plaque forms, and the amount only increases the longer you don't practice good oral hygiene habits. Eventually plaque evolves into tartar. When it's not taken care of, that buildup of tartar leads to gingivitis.
There are several symptoms and warning signs of gingivitis. The gums may be swollen, tender, and bleed easily. They may also be red instead of light pink. If you experience any of these symptoms, you may have gingivitis. Talk to your dentist about these concerns. The sooner it's taken care of, the fewer problems you'll have down the road.
